Mi smo zgazili mrak i suncu oslobodili put“.

The Bubanj Fists simbolize men’s, women’s and children’s hands raised skyward, defyingly glorifying freedom and eternal resistance.

Proud and unsubmissive fists are a part of the memorial anti-fascist complex which continues to forewarn to this day of how valuable freedom is and that it is certainly worth fighting for.

The monument is a work of a sculptor from Zagreb, Ivan Sabolić, who perpetuated sublimely the rebellious spirit of the citizens of southern Serbia.

It was uncovered on the Nis Liberation Day, October 14, 1963. The horizontal marble relief displays an engraving of the verses of the poet Ivan Vuckovic from Nis, written as follows: „From the blood of communists and patriots rose the fists of rebellion and warning, the fists of revolution, the fists of freedom. We were shot, but never killed, never subdued. We crushed the darkness and paved the way for the Sun“.
